Hybrid cars are the bridge between fuel cars and electric cars. This means that they are perfect for those looking to start reducing their carbon emissions without going fully electric. Our MG HS Plug-in Hybrid is the ultimate family car, which is powered by both fuel and electric, perfect for those long family road trips. Discover more about hybrid cars, and why they are a great option here.

What is a hybrid car?

A hybrid car combines two power sources: fuel and electricity. There are three main types of hybrid cars: hybrid, mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid. A fully hybrid car can run on either fuel, electricity or a combination of the two. A mild hybrid always runs on a combination between the combustion engine and electric motor. Lastly, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can run solely on electricity but needs to be plugged into the mains supply, like an electric car, in order to charge.

How does a hybrid car work?

Hybrid cars are powered by two main sources: an internal combustion engine and an electric motor. Depending on the type of hybrid car you have, these power sources can either work simultaneously or in silo. Some hybrids rely more on fuel like petrol, diesel and natural gas, whilst others can be powered solely by electricity. PHEV’s need to be charged via a plug in cable, whereas self-charging hybrids can recharge their batteries by regenerative braking and using the combustion engine.

Benefits of a hybrid car

  1. Dual power - Hybrid cars use two power sources which can make them easier to drive for those new to electric vehicles. No need to worry about running out of battery because you have the internal combustion engine to rely on so that you will always have power.

  1. Better for the environment - Hybrid cars are more environmentally friendly than fuel cars because they rely on less fossil fuels. They also produce zero carbon emissions when in fully electric mode which can help to reduce your carbon footprint.

  1. They are cheaper to run - Hybrid cars can be cheaper than fuel cars in the long run because you are spending less money on petrol and diesel. Their green credentials also mean that you could be eligible for tax breaks, and government schemes.

Hybrid vs. Electric Cars

Hybrid cars are a great stepping stone between a fuel and a fully electric car. However, electric cars are better for the environment because they do not release any harmful gases into the atmosphere. In order to decide what is the right car for you, it’s best to weigh up what you value the most. For example, hybrid cars can help ease range anxiety as you will always have an engine to fall back on if you run out of charge, whereas electric cars are best for those who are looking to be greener.
